Table Reading with Questions

1.The novel Fahrenheit 451 begins : “It was a pleasure to burn.” Why does Ray Bradbury start the novel in this way? Why might it be more pleasurable to burn books rather than read them?

Ray Bradbury might starts with this way as a unique starting. Gives an interest to the readers about burning books than to read it. Why? Just Why?

2. In the opening scene, why are the books compared to birds?

Could be the bird is the representation of freedom. As read so far people don't have much freedom.

3. Discuss the difference between Montag and Clarisse’s lives.

Montag is a firefighter who goes burning books than lives. While Clarissa is a young girl who is very curious. In a way is too curious where it becomes dangerous.

4. Montag’s television includes headphones called “seashells.”  The “wall to wall circuit” allows Mildred to enter the “play” and, therefore, the television programming. How does the technology within the novel compare to our current technology? In the first pages of the novel, does technology improve the quality of life for Montag and his wife, Mildred? Why or why not?

Bradbury predict how the future technology is which is the present. Amazing that he is able to predict such things. Flying cars don't exist but some believe it soon will as technology increases. Also, the technology is affecting Montag and Mildred in a bad way because they are not interacting. That is exactly like the present.

5. Why does the narrator introduce us to Montag at this time of his life, when he encounters Clarisse and confronts Mildred’s overdose?

Montag later on can realize how terrible this society is, living in. He may start question why he does all of this. Why?

6. Why does the author introduce the character of Clarisse before Mildred?

Clarissa first to show she is "normal" in the readers eyes but weird in this society. Mildred because it want to add on suspension of how terrible and brainwash this world is. She is also the opposite of Clarisse

7. Why are all the houses fireproof in this society?

The houses may all be fireproof because once the firefighters put out fire than to start it as mentioned by Clarisse. They want to erase the past.    

8. Why does Mildred require emergency service? What service is provided?

Mildred requires emergency service in trying to commit suicide, clues are the present of many pills. A machine come to serve assistance as describing the system of ambulance.

9. What is the mechanical hound and what is its purpose?

It a hound there to watch people are not reading book. It is there to harm whoever.

10. Why does the society consider Clarisse “anti-social”?

She ask many question, "normal" people do not ask. Montag made her seem very weird person but in the reader eyes she is "normal."

11. When the woman’s house is raided, why does she light the match?

To burn the book?

12. Describe the relationship between Montag and Mildred.

As mentioned they are married but do not fit the description of a married coupled.
